A debate about the role that small businesses can play in tackling modern slavery.

This event informed the debate on the role played by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in tackling modern slavery.

Under the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015, companies with an annual turnover of more than £36million, are obliged to state what steps, if any, they take to tackle modern slavery in their business activities.

This Act is a game changer in the discussion of companies’ responsibilities to respect fundamental human rights.

The event served as a space for an inter-disciplinary discussion on the legal requirements and the business case of preventing modern slavery. Participants had the opportunity to safely share disputes and difficulties in being accountable on modern slavery. We shared case studies of modern slavery due diligence that have been highlighted in current social science research.
