True crime and punishment: Exploring the influence of cultural representations of crime

The event will examine the influence of representations of crime and punishment in TV drama and fiction on social attitudes to penal policy. Crime reports are a mainstay of TV news and newspapers. Accounts of high profile crimes and detective fiction dominate the bestseller lists. This event will ask some key questions, including: What impact do these representations of crime and punishment have on social attitudes? Does society’s obsession with particularly violent crime lead to approaches that are more punitive? What is the influence of high profile crimes?
