ESRC Festival of Social Science logoSport is much loved, cherished and valued by people in Manchester and beyond. Yet sport also makes a major contribution to the British, European and global communities and social impacts; promoting social inclusion, reducing crimes and anti-social behaviour, increase sports participation for developmental and elite pathways and for public health benefits.

Manchester has developed an international reputation as being a home to high quality, world-class sport. The likes of Manchester City, the National Cycling Centre and the Great Manchester Run are some examples of this. Sport therefore makes an important community and social contribution to the city, the regions and indeed to Britain and beyond. This event examined the nature of this contribution, to discuss ways in which the contribution of sport can be further strengthened and to explore the role of the public can play in doing this.
