Buddhism is not just an ancient philosophy trapped in the past, it’s a living religion practised in creative and ever changing ways by hundreds of millions of people around the world.

Getting to Know Chinese Buddhism was held at the Manchester Art Gallery on 5th November 2016, organised by Dr Jonathan Mair together with Manchester Fo Guang Shan Temple. The event gave attendees a chance to meet Chinese Buddhists and experience Chinese Buddhist culture for themselves.
Alongside an exhibition of Master Hsing Yun’s famous ‘one-stroke calligraphy’, the event gave members of the public opportunities to try out calligraphy and see how it can help you be ‘in the moment’. Two tea zen ceremonies showed how drinking tea can develop mindfulness, and talks on ‘Humanistic Buddhism’ and on ‘Buddhism and anthropology’ helped attendees to leaned about the ways modern Chinese Buddhists have adapted ancient traditions to face modern challenges.
